India – The Deer

I saw four different kinds of deer on the trip. One variety was a subspecies of swamp deer that I thought I had a good photo of, but it turned out not. Alas, for they live only in Kanha.

The spotted deer, on the other hand, were plentiful. Their antlers must be new at this time of year, because they were still coated with a layer of fuzz.

Both parks also had plenty of sambar deer. They’re the largest of the deer in the parks. And as noted, their alarm calls are the best indication that there’s a tiger present.

The barking deer were the most elusive and also the strangest. In addition to the odd vocalizations that give them their name, they’re also omnivorous and will eat meat when the opportunity arises.
